It must reinvent itself, adjust its gospel message, be less dogmatic, more therapeutic, tolerant, and entertaining. How does a preacher get from the basic nuts and bolts of a few Bible verses to the delivery of a full sermon? That's the question David Murray answers in this instructive and immensely practical book. He demonstrates that behind the thirty to forty-five minutes we see and hear on a Sunday morning are many hours of mental, spiritual and practical labour. Like all pastoral labour, it involves head, heart and hand.Murray breaks up the sermon preparation process into a clear and simple stepby-step method, covering topics such as how to choose a text, how to introduce a sermon, how to explain a text, and how to apply it. It will provide an excellent refresher for experienced preachers and a reliable guide for those just starting out. It will also be extremely helpful to Bible class teachers, Bible Study leaders, or anyone who has to prepare a Bible message.Above all, however, it is the author s desire that this book will also be read by those who do not preach. In this treatise, the authors have thoughtfully and helpfully culled through the sermons of history to isolate the type of sermons that are most directly addressed to pastors - ordination sermons. With a careful balance between historical precision and pastoral warmth, “Being a Pastor” gleans from these sermons (particularly those of Andrew Fuller) and develops a practical guidebook for pastors that is packed with the insights and benefits of a classic like Baxter’s “Reformed Pastor” but in language that is far more accessible. This book both encouraged and challenged me as I seek to shepherd God’s flock. I had not heard of everyone who contributed to this book, but I am thankful for their ministry and heart for Christ. Overall, this book seeks to encourage and teach pastors more about the ministry that God calls them to. Subjects like calling, living as examples, preaching and teaching, and overall ideas of ministry were written about. One of my favorite chapters is entitled, “On the importance of aiming at eminent piety,” written by Archibald Alexander. This chapter alone is worth the price of the book. This chapter taught me that while I need to be focused on the holiness of the flock, I cannot turn away from pursuing holiness myself. Alexander teaches that ministers must keep a watch on their own pursuit of holiness in Christ, in order to better serve the Church of Christ. He says, “Nothing upon earth is so lovely as the mild but steady light of a holy life” (63). May this be true of all Gospel ministers. I would recommend this book to all pastors, and all who desire pastoral ministry. This work proves to remind the Gospel minister that holiness, sound doctrine, and preaching Christ crucified are vitally important in the Gospel ministry. Yet only one approach, presuppositionalism, is truly compatible with expository preaching, each sphere relying principally on God the Preacher and Apologist. The twin concepts of biblical exposition in the pulpit, and presuppositionalism in the marketplace, must start and end with (and maintain throughout) a consistent and abiding reliance on the sufficiency and superiority of Holy Scripture. Apologetic approaches other than the presuppositionalist approach often start with arguments other than Scripture for their defense of the faith, thus blunting the impact God’s Word can powerfully and effectively have in the apologetic encounter. This is no less true for the expository preaching method too, given powerfully to those who profess Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord and collectively gather to hear God’s Word. To bring maximum impact to both believers and unbelievers alike, expository preaching and presuppositional apologetics should be closely tethered, as each method starts, and consistently provides throughout, the God-intended response for all mankind.

Publisher: Free Grace Press
Type: Paperback
ISBN: 9781952599446

______________

Lance Quinn serves on the pastoral team at Grace Immanuel Bible Church in Jupiter, Florida, as the Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer of the Expositors Seminary. Churches advertise an expository ministry, but no one seems able to define it in simple terms. And scores of seminary graduates are convinced that expository preaching is just one option among several approaches to the pulpit. We desperately need bedrock clarity on this issue. With precision and pastoral heart, Lance Quinn takes us below the clichés and confusion to the cornerstone truth on which all preaching must be built: God is the preacher of His own Word. Every faithful expositor will find his heart re-energized as Quinn shows the essential link between expositional preaching and a robust presuppositional defense of the truth. Christian teachers (whether parents, schoolteachers, elders or pastors), are called to be living reflections of Christ. We are the picture our children or students witness. The impact is often lifelong, and the result can be eternal. The author insightfully examines the heartbeat of our Christian teaching under the headings of Christ’s offices: prophet, priest, and king. We all need to grow as Christian teachers in becoming Christlike prophets in teaching; as priests in sacrificing, praying, and being a blessing for; and as kings in servant leadership of, guiding, and protecting our children and students. A second quality of this book is that it is scripturally-based. This is the case not simply because Chase quotes Scripture but because he bases his arguments on the entailments of Scripture. He is not afraid to think contemplatively about what Scripture means by what it says and how its meaning ought to affect interpretation. A third quality of this book is that its argument is canonical. Chase argues his case based on the Old and New Testaments, and on how Scripture interprets Scripture. A fourth quality of the book is that it is historically-rooted. Chase’s book displays a wholesome and necessary respect for the thoughts of great minds who have gone before us. Since presuppositions are both inevitable and determinative, why not come to Scripture with time-proven assumptions? Chase’s book helps us at this very point. A fifth quality of this book is that it is practically relevant. It will help God’s people understand the written Word of God in order to love, worship, and serve God better. David King presents straightforward reasons why preachers must engage in this noble task (Part 1), then spends the bulk of the book presenting a practical approach for doing so (Part 2). Part 3 addresses the cautions and benefits when studying Scripture with Christ at the center. King’s three-step process for interpreting every Old Testament text is both clear and memorable: Text, Christ, Us (49). Decide on the main idea of the passage in its Old Testament context (52), discover the main idea’s fulfillment in Christ (59), then determine how this good news applies to us today (99). He uses plenty of examples, illustrations, and case studies, to clear up difficult questions for the student of Scripture. Of particular help is his explanation of typology and its uses (72-79). He also provides six categories, like tools in a toolbox, for understanding how the Old Testament is fulfilled in Christ (ch. 4). He then demonstrates each of these categories through actual case studies (ch. 5) and pushes hard for application to “present everyone mature in Christ” (Col 1:28). This handbook, though not intended to be exhaustive, will prove a useful resource for anyone who studies and teaches the Bible. It includes much useful application as a pastor, counselor, and parent. Readers will come away with a greater love for Christ, a better understanding of Scripture, and more confidence as they study the Old Testament.’ Thomas Sugimura

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0575/0371/1424/products/9780802423276_1dd0f39d-8a3b-4b88-a167-121267388d97.jpg?v=1686091979
9780310111566
Gospel-Driven Ministry: An Introduction to the Calling and Work of a Pastor

From the beginning of his ministry, Jesus called and equipped individuals who would serve his community of followers. These pragmatic ministry tools, though instructionally beneficial, essentially divorce biblical doctrine from ministerial practice. As a result, pastors’ lives and ministries often lack the theological roots that provide the stability and nourishment necessary to sustain them. Pastoral Theology constructs a theological framework for pastoral ministry that is biblically derived, historically informed, doctrinally sound, missionally engaged, and contextually relevant. By using traditional theological categories the authors explore the correlation between evangelical doctrine and pastoral practice. Through careful theological integration they formulate a ministry philosophy that defines the pastoral office and determines its corresponding responsibilities in light of theological truth. The authors provide a theological understanding of the pastorate that will equip aspiring pastors to discern and pursue their calling, challenge younger pastors to build on ministerial truth instead of ministerial trends, and inspire seasoned pastors to be reinvigorated in their passion for Christ and his church.

Publisher: B & H
Type: Paperback
ISBN: 9781433685781

______________

Daniel L. Preventing Ministry Failure is an updated version of James Guthrie’s A Humble Acknowledgement of the Sins of the Ministry (1651) combined with extracts from James Durham’s Commentary on Revelation. Beyond updating the language, the editors have added references verses and application questions to stimulate meditation, reflection, discussion. Pastors will enjoy help, encouragement, and counsel as they strive to fulfill their ministries above reproach.

Publisher: Reformation Heritage Books
Type: Paperback
ISBN: 9781601789365

______________

James Guthrie (1612–1661) was pastor of the church in Lauder, Berwickshire and later minister of Stirling. PKs are born into a burden and a blessing that they did not choose but in God's providence was chosen for them. And under the spotlight, they confront the world, the flesh, and the devil. This excellent and balanced volume gives biblical words, categories, and concepts to these real burdens. Every chapter in this book is worth its weight.
